Browse our new catalog of decorative switch plates and chandelier lamp shades. Find kitchen lighting ideas and learn about recessed lighting design.

The light dimmer has been on the market for around 50 years. However, light dimmers did not increase in popularity until more recently. They are used to control and regulate the voltage sent to the light source they are connected to, which decreases or increases the intensity of the light. The early light dimmers used transformers and power resistors to regulate voltage, but they were not successful. They were expensive, not durable, and produced poor results. Over time, new methods were invented. And today the light dimmer uses thyristors and triacs. Learn more about the history of the light dimmer and light socket in our new catalog of historical reprints.

Chandeliers are known for being ornate and complex. They are mounted on the ceiling and contain multiple arms with lights. The first chandeliers used candles in medieval places of assembly. In the 15th century, chandeliers became much more decorative and were used as symbols of status and luxury. By the middle of the 19th century, chandeliers were powered by gas. And in the 1890s, electricity was added to the mix. Modern chandeliers often contain prisms made of crystal or glass, which use refracted light to illuminate surroundings. Discover the rich history behind specialty lighting options within ceiling design.

We use them everyday, but we often take them for granted and don't think about how different life would be without them. Electrical sockets have evolved significantly over the years. And they are a convenience not often thought about.
